Interesting. Might have been better if you elaborated a bit on some of these but you have given me a few ideas.
I have a tip for you(traffic tip 15). The front page of this blog looks uneven with the ten entries and the blank space on the right at the bottom of the page. You can balance it out by adjusting the number of entries your front page displays.
Go into Settings from your Wordpress Dashboard, then Reading. You can change the number from there. With one main article at the top, you need to display an uneven number of posts to balance it all up. Cheers
